I completely appreciate Target's summer commercial campaign. There is a diversification I feel that has been occurring within marketing. In my long servitude to retail I have watched the evolution of types of bodies, size of bodies and colors of bodies used in advertising campaigns. All of it is fascinating. I will admit that for me it has become algorithmic in a sense, especially at the big box stores and department stores. I want to believe that the shift in diversifying the peoples in which companies choose as the faces of their advertising is directly associated to their constituency. I also understand my reservations come from being jaded in working in retail for so long! Regardless, these Target commercials are noteworthy! There is an ease in their presentation that does not make me feel as if the non-white, non-idealized bodies are tokens or tropes; that the diversification is forced. Then again? The types of men do not really shift and change beyond race... interesting?
