It Has Been a While Since I Last Blogged but Upon Discovering this I Rushed to Share: GoldieBlox.

11/23/2013

GoldieBlox's most current campaign in two minutes expresses:
  1. Although attitudes about childrearing have shifted towards more gender neutral play, girls toys are still being marketed in traditional fashion, i.e. pink!  Not to say that girls need to rebel against all pink, rather that toy companies are not keeping up with the change in parenting.
  2. The shortage in female engineers.  Although women have excelled in many occupations, now being half the population in careers like business, law, medicine and other sciences, women make up only a fifth in engineering fields and approximately the same percentage are pursuing engineer degrees in school.
  3. Combine two loves! Rube Goldberg and a remix of the Beastie Boys' Girls.
Girls.
You think you know what we want, girls.
Pink and pretty it's girls.
Just like the 50's it's girls.

You like to buy us pink toys
and everything else is for boys
and you can always get us dolls
and we'll grow up like them... false.

It's time to change.
We deserve to see a range.
'Cause all our toys look just the same
and we would like to use our brains.

We are all more than princess maids.

Girls to build the spaceship,
Girls to code the new app,
Girls to grow up knowing
they can engineer that.

Girls.
That's all we really need is Girls.
To bring us up to speed it's Girls.
Our opportunity is Girls.
Don't underestimate Girls.

Engineer, recent Stanford graduate and  Founder of Goldiblox, Debra Sterling speaks about her life goal of creating change in the toy industry through her company, gender differences, and legos and Barbies.
