Don't Wait for the Game to Change.

18 year old country music duo Maddie and Tae's first single, "Girl in a Country Song" could be a groundbreaking for young girls and country music.  No more bring the boys pies, dancing in cut offs and just going along for the ride.

Their new single is catchy and at first listen, very country but with a closer listen to the lyrics, it becomes obvious, "Girl in a Country Song" is the their polemic against stereotypical woman portrayed in a country song.  

Rollingstone writes "the most earth-shattering action, however, has happened around the teenage duo's debut single, "Girl in a Country Song." The first overt antidote to the "bro country" trend of writing about cut-off jeans, tailgates and sliding your little sugar shaker a little closer, the tune turns the tables on Marlow and Tae Dye's male country-singing peers who'd had hits with songs about enticing long-legged hotties onto truck bench seats. "Girl in a Country Song" directly references some of country radio's most played hits: Billy Currington's "Hey Girl"; Blake Shelton's "Boys 'Round Here"; Tyler Farr's "Redneck Crazy"; Florida Georgia Line's "Get Your Shine On"; and Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem," among them."

I think this is a nice change of pace, because the female empowerment I am used to in country music usually comes with slugging a baseball bat through your lover's car windows. 

Overall, the duo has peaked my interest because of their packaging.  Two blonde, 18 year old country songstress from Texas and Oklahoma, who so happen to share the same record label as Taylor Swift.  Their music sweet, young and undeniably country.  I think what is good is women within their genre of music addressing ideas of subversion and objectification.  

It feels that certain genres of music always come to mind when they talk about the objectification of women, but I feel popular music in general is melodically misogynistic and the biggest hits are a reflection of the rape culture.

All together, thus far, kudos Maddie and Tae for being a voice for your peer group and unassumingly feminist. I will totally be watching this evolve and following the hype.
