In actuality it does not seem like much of a stretch now. But the Ryan Lochte scandal during the Rio Olympic games has conjured up many think pieces about his actions and how it consequently negatively affects the perception of Americans abroad. There are also many people talking about how race and gender play a role (a great comparison is Gabby Douglass) when it comes to the reactions to Lochte's actions. To complicate things further when talking about race in regards to Lochte, is that Lochte is part Cuban. So how does that work? When you are a person of color, yet you pass as white?
